Description
🥧 Southern Buttermilk Pie is a rich, creamy classic with a perfect balance of sweet and tangy, thanks to the buttermilk.
🍽️ This easy homemade recipe produces a velvety custard filling with a golden crust, ideal for gatherings or dessert anytime.
Ingredients
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
– 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
– 3 large eggs, room temperature, beaten
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 1 tablespoon cornstarch
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
– 1 (8-inch) pie crust
Instructions
1-Start: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F, getting that cozy heat ready for your pie. Beat the melted butter and sugar together for about 5-6 minutes until it’s light and fluffy this is what gives your pie that smooth base. Once that’s done, gradually stir in the beaten eggs and vanilla extract, making sure everything blends just right.
2-Mixing and Baking the Filling: Next, blend in the flour, cornstarch, and salt to thicken things up nicely. Slowly mix in the buttermilk until your filling is smooth and creamy oh, the aroma will have you smiling already. For that pie crust, if you’re making it from scratch, roll out your dough into an 8-inch pie plate, prick it with a fork, line it with parchment, add pie weights, and pre-bake for 10 minutes.
3-Baking: After pre-baking, remove the weights and parchment, and if you like, brush the crust with an egg wash made from 1 egg whisked with 1 teaspoon water. Pour your luscious filling into the crust and pop it in the oven. Bake at 400°F for the first 10 minutes, then turn it down to 350°F and let it go for 60-70 minutes until it’s golden brown and a knife comes out clean.
4-Finishing: To finish up, turn off the oven and let the pie sit inside for another 30 minutes this helps it set just perfect. Keep an eye on that crust; if it’s browning too fast, cover it with foil. What could be simpler than that? For a fun twist, check out our pecan pie cheesecake recipe for more pie ideas.
Notes
🧀 Use room temperature ingredients for the filling to set properly.
🌿 Filling will be runny before baking but sets to custard while baking.
🥧 Cover crust with foil if it browns too fast to prevent burning.
