Evaporated Milk
Heavy Cream (optional, for creamier filling)
Large Eggs
Vanilla Extract
Salt
Pie Crust (homemade or store-bought)
Foil Ring (for protecting the crust from over-baking, optional)
Whipped Cream (optional, for serving)
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to the appropriate temperature to prepare for baking the pie.
2. Choose 2-3 large, fresh, and firm sweet potatoes as the base for the recipe.
3. Cook the sweet potatoes using your preferred methodābaking, boiling, or steamingāuntil they are fork-tender.
4. Allow the cooked sweet potatoes to cool slightly, then scoop out the flesh and mash or blend until smooth.
5. Add the sugars, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves), butter, evaporated milk (or heavy cream), eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to the mashed sweet potatoes.
6. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until a creamy and smooth filling is achieved. Use an immersion blender or food processor if necessary.
7. Prepare your pie crust, either homemade or store-bought. For homemade, mix flour, salt, sugar, butter, and ice water, then chill the dough and roll it out. Blind-bake the crust for 15-20 minutes at 350Ā°F.
8. Once the crust is ready, pour the sweet potato filling into the pre-baked crust and spread it evenly.
9. Bake the assembled pie in the oven at 350-375Ā°F for 45-55 minutes, checking to ensure the pie is set and the center is no longer liquid.
10. Allow the pie to cool completely before serving to develop its flavors and proper texture.
11. Optionally, garnish the pie with whipped cream, toasted pecans, or caramel drizzle before serving for added flavor and presentation.
Notes
1. Choose fresh and firm sweet potatoes for the best flavor and a creamy texture in your pie filling.
2. Blind bake your crust to prevent it from becoming soggy and to achieve a perfectly crisp base.
3. Incorporate a balanced blend of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger for traditional Southern flavor in every bite.
