Ingredients

Scale

¾ lb. ground beef, 80% lean
½ lb. ground pork
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ cup yellow onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup panko breadcrumbs or 2 slices of white bread, crusts removed
¼ cup Parmesan cheese
1 large egg, whisked
⅓ cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon black pepper
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons flour
2 cups low-sodium beef broth
1 cube chicken bouillon
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried parsley
½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

1. Heat half of the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, cooking until softened. Set them aside to cool.
2. In a large bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, whisked egg, and milk. Add the cooled onion and garlic mixture, followed by salt, oregano, allspice, nutmeg, and black pepper. Combine with the ground beef and pork until just mixed.
3. Form the mixture into 1 ½-inch meatballs and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
4. Heat the remaining olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs in batches, setting them aside once browned.
5. For the sauce, melt butter in the skillet. Stir in flour and cook until it is a light brown color. Gradually add the beef broth, chicken bouillon, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard, stirring continuously until smooth. Bring to a simmer.
6. Stir in the heavy cream to finish the sauce.
7. Return the meatballs to the skillet, ensuring they are well-coated with the sauce. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until cooked through.
8. Serve the meatballs over noodles or mashed potatoes, garnished with parsley. Pair with lingonberry jam for a traditional touch.

Notes

🍞 Use fresh, crustless white bread for softer meatballs. Avoid breads with seeds or grains.
🥄 Nutmeg and allspice are critical for achieving the authentic Swedish flavor.
🧊 Leftovers store well and can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for 3 months. Reheat gently to keep the sauce smooth.
